# Janice Muir: Triumphing Over Life's Perfect Storm
Life has a way of testing us, sometimes all at once. My journey through a trifecta of challenges – family trauma, personal health crisis, and professional upheaval – taught me the true meaning of resilience and the power of inner wisdom.
It began with my partner's Alzheimer's diagnosis, transforming our future into a maze of uncertainty. Let alone know I was to be caregiver, and I had to learn this skill. Yet I didn’t know how to be a caregiver when I also need care? The emotional isolation was palpable, with empathy and support often out of reach.
The journey for my daughter and I felt like an urge deep inside to choose strength, committing to manage life for all three of us, one step at a time. Was it easy No, in fact it was one of the most gruelling times in my life having to face all of this.
After dealing with this situation for a period of around 7 maybe 8 years I was then faced with a new adversity.
As I grappled with this new reality, I heard the words no one wants to hear: "You have breast cancer." Three lumps, undeniable on the X-ray.
How does one maintain self-worth when you hear these words and try to absorb what it all means? How do you battle cancer while living alone, and no one to be supportive of the journey you are about to face? After 6-8 weeks of deliberation will I; should I; what the hell am I facing here; how do I manage this and most of all where do I get support from.
After careful consideration, I was able to come to a complete full awareness and comprehension of what I had to face. I visualized through a simple drawing on graph paper, which allowed me the end outcome of opting for a mastectomy. I drew my breast to scale on the graph paper and plotted the 3 lumps this truly made my decision to go ahead with a huge distinction. From the operation and onto the 6 months of chemo I had so much deliberation and reconciling to do whilst this journey engulfed me. I arrived unscathed with 7 weeks of radiation that followed Chemo. Another cycle of facing trails and tribulations and many discussions with my naturopath who guided me with cream that truly added my skin healing that the radiologist identified that my skin healed incredibly above average. This delighted me, I was so grateful that I looked outside the square to source different ways to manage the journey.
What seemed like an eternity became a small victory, I was back to work after 10 months of managing and coping on this journey with a strong will to want to survive and break free of this horrific storm as I had witnessed.
I made a gradual return to work only to face a new uncertainty. Before I could catch my breath, my professional life began to crumble too – my entire branch of the department faced redundancy. I had only been back at work around 5 yrs by now and I was getting close to retirement and my transition to work had merely gained a meeting of discussion when the bomb hit the office meeting.
Navigating these uncharted waters was overwhelming. What not again; a headache of a different sort was now upon me.
Yet, amidst the chaos, I found clarity. I longed for professional reinvention, holistic healing, and a way to preserve my family unit. I was facing this new dilemma alone and this became the desires to become my compass.
Facing adversity, I made bold decisions. Redundancy became an opportunity for entrepreneurship...
The breakthrough came through small victories. When I looked back at each chemo session completed, each day of recovery, each small win in caring for my partner – all were steps forward. I found new excitement in personal development and writing, discovered immense relief in health decisions, and was able to celebrate the overall progress of all respective journeys, Alzheimer’s journey, breast cancer and now redundancy now being 12 yrs on at the time of writing.
Through it all, I had an epiphany: I had been in control all along. These challenges happened for me, not to me. I uncovered reserves of resilience I never knew I possessed and learned to trust my intuition implicitly. My "6th sense" became my most reliable guide in career, health, and caregiving decisions.

Our inner voice often holds the answers we seek, even in the darkest times. There's always a path forward; sometimes, the next question we ask leads to the solution we need.
